Timișul de Jos – 7 Scări – Piatra Mare

Roundtrip – 15.5km1130 m ascent (707 m to 1,829 m).

Depending on the fitness level of the group and of the length of the day it can be done in one day or you can sleep at Cabana Piatra Mare at 1600m.

Why go here:

    • you get to see Canionul 7 Scări (paid entrance).
    • gorgeous views.
    • with some luck, you can see (and maybe play with?) the famous donkeys from Cabana Piatra Mare :).

Starting point:

Timișul de Jos, accessible by car, train (2km away from the starting point) or bus all year long.

Route details

We start from Timișul de Jos and we follow the marking to “Canionul 7 (Șapte) Scări” (Seven Stairs Canyon). There are signposts and Yellow Stripe Markings and the trail is safe for families and generally crowded.

If the weather is nice there is usually a queue at the entrance in the Canyon so it might take longer than expected to pass it but it’s quite beautiful. In winter the Canyon it’s sometimes closed because of the ice but you can go around it.

After the Canyon, we continue through the forest on the same markings, Yellow Stripe, until we reach Cabana Piatra Mare (lodge). You can sleep here but you must make reservations in advance since it’s quite small.

We continue going uphill up to the Piatra Mare Peak on Red Stripe Markings and we come back the same way.

From Cabana Piatra Mare we go back to the starting point following the Red Stripe Markings, also know as Drumul Familiar. This route is safe and easy to hike and it can also be ridden on mountain bikes (quite technical).

Water Sources:

  • before the entrance in Canionul 7 Scari.
  • near Cabana Piatra Mare.

Surface

Most of the trail is roots,  mud and rocks.

Alternative routes:

  • The route can go in reverse with no problems.
