Busteni – Jepii Mici – Caraiman – Jepii Mari

Roundtrip – 16 km1480 m ascent (933 m to 2,291 m).

Jepii Mici is one of the most beautiful climbs in Romania but it’s quite difficult.

Why go here:

    • a lot of elevation of various terrains.
    • beautiful views.
    • you get to see the Caraiman Cross.

Starting point:

Bușteni, accessible by car, train or bus all year long.

Route details

The route starts from the Cable Car in Bușteni. There are multiple paid parking lots where you can leave the car.

We hike up the Jepii Mici Valley, on Blue Stripe Markings, up to Cabana Caraiman 2025m (lodge).  The route is slippery with a lot of big rocks and plenty of chains and risks.

From Cabana Caraiman we follow the Blue Circle Markings on Brâna Mare a Caraimanului up to Crucea de pe Caraiman – a monument with amazing views.

We go back the same way and we continue on Red Triangle markings up to Cantonul Schiei (1960m).

From there we go down on Jepii Mari, marked with Blue Triangle.

Trail Markings: the route is 100% on marked trails, there are no orientation problems.

Water Sources:

  • the climb is on a river valley but it’s safer to carry your own water.
  • there is a spring at Cabana Caraiman but it’s dry most of the time.

Surface

Most of the trail is roots,  mud and rocks.

There are exposed parts with the risk of falling and there are multiple dangerous parts.

Good hiking shoes are mandatory.

Alternative routes:

  • The route can go in reverse with no problems.
  • You can both up and down on Jepii Mici.
  • You can use the cable car to go up or down.
  • If there is time (or if you are taking the cable car), you can make a detour and visit Babele and the Sphinx.
  • You can sleep at Cabana Babele or at Cabana Caraiman and make the route in two days.
