Roundtrip – 14 km, 940 m ascent (1,606 m to 2,505 m)
Cabana Omu (2500m) is the highest lodge in Romania and the peak above it is in the top 10.
Why go here:
-
- an accessible hike that reaches one of the highest peaks in Romania.
- excellent views all around – it starts above the forest line.
Starting point:
Peștera first aid station, accessible by car on good asphalt.
There is also a cable car that comes here from Babele – and you can get there by another cable car from Bușteni.
Route details
The route goes up on the Blue Stripe markings. To the West of the trail, there is the river Ialomița, which at this point is a small stream but until it reaches the Danube it becomes one of the biggest rivers in Romania (400km long).
Halfway up there is a beautiful waterfall, Cascada Obârșia (~2000m).
If there is snow it’s safer to leave the Blue Stripe and go over the Bucura Peak (2503m) – which is the second highest peak from Bucegi, after Omu – our destination.
From Omu we will hike on the ridge following the Red Stripe Markings up to Doamnele Peak (2402m). From there we will go down on the Red Circle Markings until we reach the starting point.
Trail Markings: the route is 100% on marked trails, there are no orientation problems.
Water Sources:
- the climb goes parallel with a stream (Ialomița) but it’s safer to carry your own water.
- there is no water at the Omu Lodge.
Surface
Most of the trail is rock, grass and dirt.
Alternative routes:
- You can climb and descent the same way, on the Blue Stripe markings.
- The route can be done in reverse.
- You can go further on the ridge on the Red Stripe markings and come down from Bătrâna Peak (Red Triangle Markings).
