Starting point:
Vidraru Dam or Hotel Posada, accessible by car on good asphalt all year long.
Route details
The course follows the Red Triangle Markings all the way up and down.
Across the parking lot from Hotel Posada you will see the first markings and the trail.
The first part of the climb (up to Poiana Pleașa) is quite steep but after that, it’s a pleasant hike.
From Poiana Pleașa you can see the Vidraru Lake, Cetatea Poienari and a part of the main ridge of the Făgăraș Mountain – some of the highest visible peaks are: Negoiu, Lespezi, Lipitoarea Ciocanului, Scara, Ciortea.
If there is fog, the markings from Poiana Pleașa might be hard to spot but just keep going uphill to the East.
From the Albina Peak (1,372m) there is a panorama over the villages in the south and the nearby mountain, Ghițu.
Trail Markings: the route is 100% on marked trails, there are no orientation problems.
Water Sources:
- none
Surface
Most of the trail is dirt, covered by the forest. There are no exposed or dangerous parts even in winter.
Alternative routes:
- There should be enough time in a single day to also visit Cetatea Poienari that is nearby.
- Do NOT follow the Red Circle Markings that go from the Vidraru Dam to Poiana Pleașa – there are closed gates on the way, near the dam.
